On June 29 of this year the Federal Government pushed the 'Stronger Futures' legislation through Parliament, extending the Howard Government's Northern Territory Intervention for the next ten years. Many NT communities met the continuation of the laws with dismay, pointing to the increased incidence of suicide and self-harm attempts, arrest and incarceration rates, welfare dependency rates, and lowered school attendance that have accompanied the introduction of the Intervention, as well as the Government's sham consultation process. (See: stoptheintervention.org/facts) Special rapporteurs of the United Nations have described the Stronger Futures legislation as threatening to the human rights of Australia's indigenous communities. Why is the Labor Party committed to the extension of the Intervention regime? Gary Foley is a prominent activist and historian who, since his involvement in the Black Power movement of the early 1970s, has been a central figure in the struggle for Aboriginal land rights and self-determination. Monica Morgan is Manager of Indigenous People's Rights at Amnesty International Australia and a founder of the Murray Lower Darling Rivers Indigenous Nations (MLDRIN) who has a long history in advocacy for Indigenous land and water rights and for the rights of Indigenous Women. Join us for this evening of discussion when Gary and Monica will speak on the politics of the Intervention and the ALP's continued support for it. Hosted by The New International Bookshop, entry will be by $10/5 donation to the Bookshop Co-operative.
