We are thrilled to welcome Hamid Ismailov to speak this term. His talk will be on the topic of multiculturalism in Russia and Central Asia, with a particular focus on literature. Hamid Ismailov is a prominent journalist and writer, who has been exiled from his native Uzbekistan since 1992 due to the content of his works, which are banned in Uzbekistan. He is also a former Writer in Residence for the BBC World Service. His most recent book, The Dead Lake, was published in English in 2014. The talk will be chaired by Dr Samantha Sherry. She is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. Here research interests centre on Soviet cultural history, especially the interaction between authorities and culture. She has published on the censorship of translation in the Soviet Union and her monograph on this topic, Discourses of Regulation and Resistance, is forthcoming with Edinburgh University Press. Her current project is a study of the censor as a cultural figure in the Soviet Union.
