"Other Than Human" Recent works by Jan Harrison, Chris Harvey, and Susan Siegel Opening reception: Saturday, June 2, 5-7pm In June, KMOCA presents three artists with fascinations for creatures other than humans. Each artist in their own way explores how by blurring the dividing line with the "other than human," we might become something other than human ourselves. Jan Harrison's pastel paintings of animals connect with the animal nature within ourselves and the world, to re-establish empathy with nature and its beings. Deeply concerned about the plight of animals, Jan has been involved in animal rights for many years, while her work has been featured in numerous galleries and museums from New York, to New Orleans, to Finland, and Australia. The recipient of five grants, Harrison's art has been the subject of essays and books regarding the animal/human interface. Originally from Florida, Jan has made her home in the Rondout section of Kingston since 1989. On opening night, Jan will be doing a live performance, speaking and singing in "Animal Tongues." Chris Harvey's works on paper blend line drawings of animals and people with decorative elements on crisp white backgrounds. A multi-media artist and animation designer, Chris has received Emmy and Peabody awards, as well as recognition at film festivals across the country and abroad. Chris has been making sculptures, paintings and drawings sporadically since childhood. Susan Siegel's paintings are inspired by the grand tradition of 18th Century Rococo portraiture. Playing with the conventions of formal portraiture, she is interested in revealing the emotional truths behind the artifice. Fantastical hybrid creatures wander a dreamy and pastoral world, like their Rococo forebears, blurring the lines between animal and human. Susan has exhibited widely, including Flowers Gallery in New York and most recently was a featured artist in the Northeast Issue of New American Paintings. Originally from California, Susan lives in NYC, where she earned her MFA from the NY Academy of Art. "Other Than Human" continues at KMOCA through June 30. KMOCA is open on Saturdays 12 - 4, or by appointment. Kingston Museum of Contemporary Arts 103 Abeel Street http://www.kmoca.org coming soon: http://kmoca.com
