On November 14, 1943, Leonard Bernstein made one of the most dramatic debuts in Carnegie Hall’s history when he stepped in at the last minute to conduct the New York Philharmonic for Bruno Walter. With no time for a rehearsal, the 25 year-old Bernstein led the orchestra through its program of Schumann, Rósza, Strauss, and Wagner.
