Want to start a vegetable or flower garden, but don’t want to invest in large quantities of seeds? Are you wanting to try growing something new this year? Do you have extra seeds you’ve saved that you want to donate to a good cause? Join us for a Seed Share on April 2. Johnson County Master Gardeners and the Iowa City Public Library are partnering to offer the public Seed Share on Sunday, April 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The activity will be held in Meeting Room A at the Iowa City Public Library. The event is free and open to the public. Gardening enthusiasts are invited to donate saved seeds to share with others. This is the first year for the Seed Share collaboration. Seed companies were invited to donate seeds and partner with JCMG and ICPL creating opportunities for the seed swap. To date, the project received donations from Burpee, Baker Seeds and Seed Savers. The project is a component of the JCMG Growing Together efforts to reduce food insecurity among individuals and families in Johnson County communities. Nearly 30 varieties of vegetable and herb seeds will be available. Master Gardeners and other gardeners who want to share vegetable or flower seeds are encouraged to bring the seeds to the event. Seeds less than two years old are requested to aid in successful germination. If you are bringing bulk quantities of saved seeds, please look up planting instructions to bring with your seeds. Packaging, labeling and instructional materials will be available for contributors to identify and package the seeds and provide planting instructions. An early date for the Seed Share was selected to allow gardeners to start seedlings indoors before temperatures warm sufficiently to plant outside in mid-May. Planting guides and recipe cards will be available for those participating.
